MSOR Residence – Two Storey Detached Dwelling – A contemporary take on a traditional farmhouse style residence. The aim of this design was to redesign the farmhouse style to suit modern day living. While maximising solar gains, beautiful views and creating efficient spaces to lower construction costs.

Conceptual Ideas

As the new dwelling is to be constructed on a green field site surrounded by mature woodland to the south and east of the site the virgin provenance of the site is distinct in setting and should be respected. As such, our thoughts for the new dwelling evolved around the following concepts:

  1. The house should be seen as an object in the landscape;
  2. Materials take their cue from the ‘home’ house but with a contemporary twist so as to connect with the site context and partial woodland setting;
  3. The transition between inside and outside for the main spaces is blurred with outdoor living promoted;
  4. Spaces arranged according to the sun path and natural body cycle;
  5. Efficient use of space but sense of space maximised through far-reaching vistas to the garden;

Architects in WestmeathThe proposed dwelling sits deep into the site to align with a neighbouring property but also to avoid the overreaching shadow of the trees to the south and east. The living, kitchen and dining spaces are orientated to maximise natural light and garden views. The house and outbuilding (garage or stables or both) are arranged to form a courtyard which to park and enter the house via a covered walkway. The drive snakes through the site so that guests view and appreciation of the house changes en route. Both house and outbuilding form an equal relationship and create a strong focus for the site and setting.

 

The proposed dwelling is over two storeys with the primary living spaces on the ground floor and the bedroom accommodation on the first floor. The open plan kitchen, dining and living spaces are arranged to maximise natural light and access to the garden. The kitchen has a large island and is in close proximity to the utility / laundry. The living room is accessed via 2No. steps down and has its own access to the garden. The living space is also double height to maximise the sense of space. To the east of the house is a multipurpose room which can be the 4th bedroom, a snug or an office as required.

 

 

 

The upstairs has 3No. bedrooms, a family bathroom and a hot press. The spacious master suite has a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite. From the landing views can be got through the high level glazing in the living room. This again helps to maximise the sense of space. On both floors the windows are arranged to frame scenic views but also to utilise solar gains as a free heat sourse. Ground floor area = 92m² First floor area = 68m² Total floor area = 160m²
